About Baseball, Loyalty, and Selling

Today, local athlete Edgar Martinez announced his retirement at the end of the baseball season. The Seattle Mariners are having a brutal season - so as a 41-year-old veteran of the team, timing is probably right for Edgar.

What I enjoyed most was hearing what Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda said that many people originally thought Edgar would "never make it" - that he was too slow, among other things. Now that Edgar will end an 18 year run here in Seattle - only Cincinnati's Barry Larkin has played more seasons with one team than Martinez among active players. Remember one-team players?

I know that if you are not from the NW, most Mariners players are just not very impressive, right? But to note Edgar's accomplishments - from the Seattle Times today:

He has 2,205 hits and a career average of .312, second in Mariners history behind only Ichiro, along with 305 home runs and 1,244 runs batted in. He is the M's club leader in hits, walks, doubles, runs, RBI and games played.

Not to mention, a heck of a community pillar - supporting many local causes.

What does this have to do with selling? Selling is all about relationships, loyalty, and trust. Numbers count, too - whether you compete with yourself or challenge those on your team - track your successes.

And find inspiration - some of us get some through local standouts in the community, like Edgar.
